Dark Sky Project is located in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, the largest Dark Sky Reserve in the world and the first to be awarded gold tier status, Takapō (Tekapo) is one of the quietest spots on the planet yet it has one of the busiest night skies in the universe.

BY DAY- Discover the night sky during the day with the new indoor multi-media daytime astronomy experience that combines tātai aroraki (Māori astronomy) and science. At just 45 minutes long with daytime and early evening tours available, this experience is perfect for those staying overnight or simply passing through.

Sit back and relax at Dark Sky Project’s two exquisite eateries. Overlook the picturesque Lake Tekapo as you dine at Dark Sky Diner. During the day, hike or drive up Mt John and enjoy a refreshment at the Astro Café whilst taking in the stunning surrounds that boasts some of the world’s best views including the Mackenzie Basin and Aoraki Mt Cook..

EVENING EXPERIENCES - Dark Sky Project offer a range of experiences at exclusive locations in this world-renowned stargazing destination including the Summit Experience at Ōtehīwai, University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory, Lake Front Experience at the Church of the Good Shepherd and the Crater Experience at Cowan’s Observatory. Stunning surrounds, pristine night skies, premier destinations, expert guides and astrophotographers make Dark Sky Project the ultimate place to reflect, to discover and to be inspired.

There is road access to the summit of Mt John. Please note: a road-user fee applies (payable at gate). This toll is to cover the high maintenance costs of the private road.
